Capital One’s New 150K Business Bonus: Is It Actually Worth the Spend?
Hey friends, what’s up? Phillip here from Points with Phillip. Today, we’re diving into some big news from Capital One. They’ve recently revamped their business credit card lineup, moving away from the "Spark" branding and aligning them with the "Venture" family.
While there is a new all-time high signup bonus on the table, we need to talk about why it might not be the right move for everyone. Before we jump in, don’t forget to hit that like button and subscribe for more points and miles updates!
The Big Revamp: Meet the Venture Business Cards
Capital One has officially rebranded their business cards. The two heavy hitters we’re looking at today are:
The Venture Business Card (formerly the Spark Miles)
The Venture One Business Card
The most interesting part of this shift is that Capital One seems to be moving away from simple cash back and leaning heavily into their miles-based ecosystem for business owners.
The All-Time High Bonus (And the Catch)
The Venture Business Card currently features a massive 150,000-mile signup bonus. On paper, that’s incredible. However, the spending requirement is a steep hill to climb. The bonus is broken into two tiers:
Tier 1: Earn 75,000 miles after spending $7,500 in the first 3 months.
Tier 2: Earn an additional 75,000 miles after spending a total of $30,000 in the first 6 months.
For many small business owners, $30,000 in six months is a lot of capital to deploy. If you can’t hit that second tier, you’re "only" getting 75,000 miles, which is still good, but it changes the math on whether this card is the best value for your spend.
A Quick Personal Note: My Weight Loss Journey
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the competition, I wanted to share a quick update. Many of you know I’ve lost over 100 pounds over the last year and a half. While walking my miniature schnauzer and hitting the gym has been key, I’ve also had help through weight loss shots.
If your insurance doesn't cover these but you’re looking to start your own journey, I’ve included a link in the description/below that can help you find affordable quotes to get started. Now, back to the cards!
Venture Business Card: Features & Perks
For a $95 annual fee, the Venture Business card is actually quite a powerhouse:
2x Miles on every purchase, no limits.
5x Miles on Capital One Business Travel.
$120 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Credit (every four years).
$50 Annual Software Credit (great for Adobe or website subscriptions).
$50 Annual Travel Credit for bookings through the Capital One Business portal.
Essentially, between the software and travel credits, the card pays for itself before you even factor in the Global Entry credit or the miles earned.
The Competition: Why You Might Look Elsewhere
Even with a 150k bonus, the Venture Business card has some stiff competition. Depending on your spending habits, these might be better:
1. Chase Ink Business Preferred ($95 AF)
Bonus: 100,000 points after $8,000 spend.
Why it might be better: You get a huge bonus for much less spend. Plus, you get 3x back on travel, shipping, and advertising.
2. Amex Business Gold or Platinum
If you have $15,000 to $30,000 in spend, you might be targeted for an Amex Business Gold (100k-200k points) or a Business Platinum (up to 300k points). The annual fees are much higher ($375 and $695+ respectively), but the point infusions are massive.
3. The No-Annual-Fee Options
Venture One Business: Earns 1.5x on everything.
Amex Blue Business Plus: Earns 2x back on every purchase (up to $50k/year) for $0 annual fee. If your spend is lower, the Blue Business Plus is hard to beat.
Chase Ink Business Unlimited: 1.5x back on everything with a solid 75k bonus for much lower spend.
The Verdict
The new Venture Business card is a solid offer, especially if you have a lot of "uncategorized" spend and want a simple 2x-back structure. I love Capital One’s transfer partners like Virgin, Air France, and the Avios ecosystem.
However, if $30,000 in spend sounds daunting, you might be better off grabbing a Chase Ink card or an Amex. I’m currently working on other bonuses, so I’ll be sitting this one out, but for the right business, it’s a killer deal.
