Capital One’s integration of Discover just gave one of my oldest credit cards a much more useful credit limit.
After one of my Discover it accounts moved into the Capital One app, I successfully transferred most of that card’s $12,000 credit limit to my Capital One Quicksilver Visa.
For someone who has spent years trying to grow the limit on a longtime Capital One account, that’s a pretty exciting development.
It also opens up a bigger conversation: Can Discover help you work around a stubborn Capital One credit limit? Is the Discover it still worth getting for cash back? And could this integration eventually make Capital One’s travel rewards ecosystem even better?
Here’s what happened with my accounts, what’s available today, and what I’m still hoping to see.
My Experience With Capital One’s “Bucketing” Problem
Capital One was one of the first banks in my credit card journey. My first card was a Capital One Platinum, and my second was a Quicksilver that is now my oldest open account.
That Quicksilver has been with me for roughly 15 or 16 years. I like having that history, but getting a meaningful credit limit on it has been frustrating.
If you’ve had a similar experience, you’ve probably heard people call it “bucketing.” It’s an informal term credit card enthusiasts use to describe accounts whose limits seem difficult to grow, even as the cardholder’s financial situation improves.
I’ve received increases on some Capital One accounts, but they haven’t always been substantial. Meanwhile, my two Discover cards have limits of $12,000 and $15,000.
That difference became much more interesting once Discover accounts started moving into Capital One’s system.
What Happened When My Discover Card Moved
When my first Discover account appeared in the Capital One app in October 2026, I immediately wanted to test two things:
Could I move some of its credit limit to my Capital One cards?
Could I convert its cash back into Venture miles?
At first, neither option was available to me.
But after the transition progressed, I was able to move most of the $12,000 Discover credit limit to my Quicksilver Visa.
That’s the successful part of this experiment. My Quicksilver now has access to credit that had previously been sitting on a different card.
Capital One’s published guidance confirms that eligible customers can transfer part of their available credit between Capital One and Discover cards. Availability depends on the accounts involved.
How to Check for a Discover-to-Capital One Credit Line Transfer
If your accounts are eligible, Capital One lists this process in its mobile app:
Sign in and select the card you want to receive the additional credit limit.
Look for Manage your credit line.
Select Transfer credit line between cards, if the option appears.
Review the available transfer amount and confirm your request.
This moves available credit between accounts. It doesn’t move your debt, create additional total credit, or close either card. Capital One also says the transfer doesn’t generate a credit inquiry, and you can’t move an account’s entire credit line.
For me, that makes this useful even without a traditional credit limit increase. I can put more of my existing credit on the card where I want it.
Just remember that lowering the limit on the sending card can change that account’s utilization if it has a balance.
Why I’m Trying to Upgrade My Quicksilver to Venture X
My bigger goal is to see whether this higher Quicksilver limit helps me receive a Venture X upgrade offer.
I haven’t received that upgrade yet. Moving credit limit doesn’t guarantee that Capital One will offer a product change. That’s the next part of the experiment.
You might also be wondering why I want a Venture X when you’ve already seen one in my wallet.
The card I currently carry is an authorized-user card on my wife’s account. What I’m considering now is having my own primary account as I reevaluate the premium cards in our household.
Venture X has a $395 annual fee, earns at least 2 miles per dollar on purchases, offers a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit, and provides 10,000 anniversary miles starting at the first anniversary.
Those benefits make it a card I’m willing to consider as part of a simpler travel setup.
An upgrade also comes with a tradeoff: I wouldn’t assume it includes the welcome bonus available through a new application. I’ll need to compare the actual upgrade terms with my other options before deciding.
Discover it Still Has a Strong Cash Back Case
Even without the credit line transfer opportunity, I think Discover it deserves a look for people who want straightforward cash back.
The rotating-category version earns 5% back on up to $1,500 in eligible quarterly category purchases after activation. You need to activate each quarter, including after your account moves to Capital One.
Eligible new cardmembers also receive first-year Cashback Match under the applicable offer.
That can make the ordinary 5% category earnings effectively worth 10% after the match, within the category spending cap. Ordinary 1% purchase rewards effectively become 2%.
The timing matters: the additional match comes after the first year, rather than with each purchase. Discover’s published terms also exclude certain rewards and credits, so don’t assume every promotional dollar will be doubled.
In the video, I discussed a referral offer that could provide up to $300 in additional bonuses. Check the exact application page for the offer available to you, its requirements, and whether the advertised bonuses can be combined.
Capital One Offers Adds Another Reason to Pay Attention
The Discover integration also brings access to more earning opportunities.
Capital One’s transition materials advertise access to Capital One Offers, Capital One Travel, and Capital One Entertainment for migrated Discover accounts. Eligible bookings through Capital One Travel can earn 5% cash back, subject to the program’s terms.
That gives Discover cardholders more places to look for rewards beyond the quarterly categories.
For example, if you’re booking a hotel, it’s worth comparing a merchant offer with the travel portal’s final price and terms. A higher advertised rewards rate doesn’t automatically make the booking a better deal.
I’d also verify whether a particular promotional reward qualifies for Cashback Match before including a doubled amount in your calculations.
Can Discover Cash Back Become Venture Miles?
This is the feature I’m most interested in seeing next.
At the time of my video, I could not move my Discover cash back into Venture miles.
That distinction matters. Having Discover and Capital One accounts in the same app doesn’t mean every rewards feature works across both programs.
I’m hoping that changes, because combining Discover’s rotating categories with flexible travel rewards would make the ecosystem much more compelling for me. For now, though, I’m treating that as a possibility—not a benefit to count on when applying.
Why Capital One Miles Fit the Way I Travel
A rewards program doesn’t have to win every theoretical comparison to work well for your household.
Some of my Bilt redemptions have involved transferring points to Virgin Atlantic and British Airways to complete bookings. Those experiences reminded me that the points I actually use matter more than an impressive redemption I never book.
That’s how I’m approaching Capital One, too. I want rewards that fit the flights we take, the trips we plan, and the amount of effort I’m willing to put into booking.
Discover’s integration has already made my existing credit more useful. Whether it eventually makes my rewards more useful is what I’m watching next.
Have you moved credit limit between Discover and Capital One yet? And would the ability to convert Discover cash back into Venture miles change how you use your cards? Let me know in the comments.
