The American Express Gold Card 2026 Refresh: A Mini Travel Powerhouse?

Hey friends, what’s up? Phillip here with Points with Phillip. Today, we are breaking down a massive update that was just announced. American Express has officially refreshed the Gold Card, and they’ve essentially turned it into a mini travel powerhouse.

If you’ve been sitting on this card for its dining perks, your wallet is about to look very different in 2026. From new 5x multipliers to rental car elite status, here is everything you need to know about the new AMEX Gold.

The "Good": New Multipliers and Travel Perks

The biggest news today is that AMEX is finally getting aggressive with their travel portal multipliers to compete with issuers like Citi and Chase.

  • 5x on Prepaid Hotels: This is the headliner. Previously, the card officially earned 2x on travel (though many of us saw 3x promos). Now, it is a locked-in 5x on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com.

  • 2x on General Travel: You’ll now earn 2x points on prepaid car rentals and even cruises booked through the portal.

  • Hertz Five-Star Status: This is a brand-new addition. Gold cardmembers are now eligible for complimentary Hertz Five-Star Status. While I’ve had my share of "adventures" with rental car damage claims in the past (always take that walk-around video!), the status generally means better car selection and smoother rentals.

  • The Classics Remain: You still get 4x back on restaurants worldwide (up to $50k/year) and 4x at US Supermarkets (up to $25k/year). Pro-tip: If you shop at a Walmart Neighborhood Market, it often still codes as 4x grocery!

The "Bad": A Higher Bar for New Members

Surprisingly, the annual fee is holding steady at $325 for now. However, there is a catch for new applicants. While you can snag a massive 100,000 Membership Reward points signup bonus, the spending requirement has jumped. You now have to spend $8,000 within the first 6 months to trigger that bonus. It’s a steep climb, but the payoff is huge if you have major expenses coming up.

The Dining Credit Shake-up

The $120 annual dining credit ($10/month) has been revamped to be more flexible for 2026:

  • Seamless Integration: You can now use the credit on Seamless, which opens the door for Instacart/grocery deliveries via Sprouts or other healthy options.

  • New Partners:Buffalo Wild Wings and Wonder (a boutique delivery service in the Northeast) have joined the roster.

  • What’s Gone:Goldbelly has been removed from the list. If you were a fan of getting celebrity chef meals delivered to your door, you’ll need to find a new way to pay for those "trash can nachos."

Note: The $84 Dunkin’ credit, $100 Resy credit, and $120 Uber Cash remain unchanged.

Is it Still a Keeper?

For me, this refresh makes the Gold Card a much stronger competitor against the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Citi Strata Premier. The ability to earn 5x on hotels while keeping the industry-leading 4x on food is a "lifestyle plus travel" combo that is hard to beat.

Personally, I’m weighing my options. My annual fee is coming up, and I’m considering a "downgrade/upgrade" strategy to see if I can trigger an upgrade bonus. If not, I might move some spend to my Bilt or Citi cards to diversify my points.

What do you think? Are these new travel perks enough to keep the Gold Card in your wallet, or is the $8k spend requirement for the bonus a dealbreaker? Let me know in the comments below!
